What is physics and its scope?


Physics is a branch of science that explores the nature and properties of matter and energy. It aims to understand how objects move, what forces apply to them, and how they interact. In short, physics attempts to explain how the universe operates.

Physics covers everything from the smallest particles to the largest structures in the universe, including galaxies and black holes. Physics forms the foundation of many sciences and is essential in fields such as chemistry, astronomy, and engineering, as it provides the basis for understanding the laws of the physical world.

Scope of physics

The scope of physics is very vast and it can be divided into many main areas. Some of the main topics of physics are given below:

1. Mechanics

Mechanics deals with the behavior of physical bodies when forces or displacements are applied to them. It deals with the motion of objects and the forces that cause this motion. Some of the key concepts within mechanics include:

  • Dynamics: The study of motion without considering its causes.
  • Dynamics: The study of forces and their effects on motion.
  • Statics: The study of forces in equilibrium.

Suppose that raindrops are creating a rainbow by refracting sunlight. When light passes through a lens, it bends or refracts, which is the principle that allows glasses, microscopes and cameras to focus light.

5. Quantum physics

Quantum physics explores the behaviour of matter and energy at the atomic and subatomic levels. It challenges classical physics by introducing concepts such as quantisation and wave-particle duality.

An example of quantum physics is the behavior of electrons in atoms. Electrons do not follow well-defined paths like classical particles; instead, they exhibit wave-like properties.

Important principles and laws of physics

Physics is based on many laws and principles that describe natural phenomena. Here are some basic laws and principles:

  • Newton's laws of motion: These laws describe the relationship between a body and the forces acting on it.
  • 1. An object stays at rest or moves in a straight line unless acted upon. 2. Force equals mass times acceleration: F = ma. 3. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
    
  • Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another.
  • Laws of Thermodynamics: They lay down the principles of energy flow and heat.
