Intensity, loudness and quality of sound


Sound is a complex phenomenon that affects many aspects of our lives. It is not just about what we hear at concerts; it also plays an important role in nature and technology. Understanding the characteristics of sound involves understanding key elements such as pitch, loudness and quality of sound. These are fundamental concepts in the study of waves and sound.

What is sound?

Sound is a type of energy produced by vibration. When an object vibrates, it causes the surrounding medium (usually air) to vibrate as well. These vibrations in the air travel as sound waves. If these sound waves reach our ears, we can hear them.

The diagram above shows a simple sound wave that travels in air. This wave has crests (peaks) and troughs. Let's explore the important characteristics of sound waves.

Intonation

The pitch of a sound is determined by how high or low it is. It depends on the frequency of the sound wave, which is the number of vibrations per second. This frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz).

Understanding frequency

If the frequency of a sound wave is high, it means that more waves are passing a point every second, making the sound louder. Conversely, a low frequency means fewer waves and a lower sound. The sound produced by a bird chirping is an example of a high sound. Conversely, the sound of a bass guitar produces a low sound.

In the illustration above, the red wave has a higher frequency than the green wave (more cycles of the same length) and so it corresponds to a higher pitch.

Loudness

Loudness is the feeling of strength or intensity of sound. It is related to the amplitude of the sound wave. The higher the amplitude, the louder the sound.

Amplitude in sound waves

The amplitude of a sound wave is the height of the wave above its rest position. It is analogous to the volume of the sound; for example, whispering produces small amplitude sound waves, while shouting produces large amplitude waves.

The orange wave, which represents a more intense sound, has a greater amplitude than the purple wave.

It is important to note that loudness can be perceived differently by different people. The unit for measuring loudness is the decibel (dB).

Quality or timbre of sound

The quality or timbre of sound refers to the characteristic that allows us to distinguish between different sources of sound that have the same pitch and loudness. The quality is what makes a piano sound different from a violin, even if both are playing the same note at the same loudness.

Complex sounds

In reality, most sounds are not pure. They contain a fundamental frequency and additional frequencies called harmonics or overtones. The presence and relative intensity of these harmonics contribute to the timbre of the sound.

Example of a pitch

Let us consider two musical notes, C and A. The frequency of note C is approximately 261.63 Hz, while the frequency of A is approximately 440 Hz. Here, note A is considered to be higher pitched than note C because of its higher frequency.

Two people are talking: one person is whispering at a volume of about 20 dB, and the other person is speaking normally at a volume of about 60 dB. The second person's voice sounds louder because of the higher sound wave amplitude.

Example of quality

When you hear the same musical note played on a guitar, flute and piano, you can distinguish them based on the instrument being played. This ability is due to the different tones produced by each instrument.

Real-life applications

Understanding the characteristics of sound is important in various fields. In music, it is necessary to produce the desired pitch and control loudness and quality. In communication, controlling pitch and loudness is important to express emotions. In addition, understanding sound enhances technology such as noise-canceling headphones, ensuring a quality listening experience.
